TERA: Rising Review – Skill-Based RNGBy Michael Sagoe (Mikedot), OnRPG JournalistIt’s always been in the minds of gamers for years regarding whether it would be possible to create an MMORPG with satisfying combat similar to hack n’ slash action games. Titles such as Phantasy Star Online, Vindictus, Monster Hunter and many others have dabbled with this concept, but have always had a single glaring flaw: Combat that was locked away in room-based instances and had restricted player limits. Now the dream of a hack & slash MMORPG was realized with the release of (The Exiled Realm of Aborea.) Recently, the game has gone through some hefty changes, with the most notable change being the transition from a P2P to a F2P business model. Bluehole Studios, En Masse Entertainment and Gameforge have made some bold claims with TERA’s gameplay, such as “True skilled based combat” and “Victory is determined by skill, not levels or gear.”, as if the game was made for action gamers in mind, rather than typical MMORPG players.Just how true are these claims? Is TERA a true hack & slash MMO?
After eight months of playtime, I can answer this question by saying: “Yes and no.”CustomizationThe customization in TERA holds up with some above average features, but doesn’t quite hit the mark. With seven different races and eight classes, there are plenty of options to choose from. The best part is that none of the classes are locked by race or gender, so you’re free to mix and match with some outrageous outcomes. Initial character creation starts to fall short after that, however.
You have several options including hair style, skin/fur color, face type and some face sliders for finer detailing, but there’s no options for body sliders and several customization options are inseparable, such as not being able to separate different animal ears with hair styles for the Elin race. Don’t be surprised if you end up running into a clone of your character every now and then.Tweaking out your character for battle comes in the form of crystals, equipment mods and glyphs. Crystals are stat modifiers that activate once certain conditions have been met. Equipment mods are passive skills that include increasing attack speed or defense against monsters. Glyphs are active skill mods that range from increased skill damage, skill resets and more. Crystals are fairly easy to obtain, as well as easy to lose since they can break upon dying in combat, so you may have to stock up on them. There are quite a few crystals, mods and glyphs to choose from, but only a handful of these combinations are actually viable for both PvE and PvP, not to mention that getting the equipment mods you want revolve around having to use identification scrolls to re-roll the stats you don’t want, as well as spending hundreds and thousands of gold to keep the ones you do.
It’s all based on random luck whether you’ll get these stats, which turns into a tiresome chore. In fact, the amount of content and features in TERA that is based on random luck is one of the biggest issues that players will suffers from on a regular basis (more on this later.)ControlsThe control scheme for TERA does not play out like your typical point & click style MMO. Instead, it uses a control scheme similar to third person action and shooter titles. Default controls are laid out with WASD for movement, mouse movement for aiming, left mouse button for auto-attacking, right mouse button for blocking/dodging and 1-12/F1-12 keys for skills. Since TERA’s combat is so much more engaging, this can take a lot of getting used to. Setting up your hotkeys for skills is fairly crucial when performing a sequence of them for combo attacks.
The game tries to remedy this for new and casual types by including a skill chain system that allows players to activate a set of skills in sequence with the use of only one single set key/button. It certainly works well enough, but activating skills manually is always more effective.TERA also attempts to give players a more console hack & slash experience by allowing the use of gamepads. It works well up to level 20, but due to the amount of active skills players will get in the later levels, as well as the amount of scrolling speed players will need against tougher monsters and dungeons, it becomes very ineffective, so players are better off sticking to the keyboard & mouse as soon as they start playing.page Gameplay and FeaturesTERA: Rising is an MMORPG that claims to feature “True action combat” in an open world environment, and this claim is true, but only to a certain extent. Unlike traditional MMORPGs, TERA’s combat system utilizes hitboxes and attack space, much like with hack & slash games. As a small example: When you aim and swing your sword around against a crowd of monsters in front of you, it will actually hit all those monsters. Players will also have to block and dodge enemy attacks manually, position themselves to attack enemy weak spots from behind for extra damage, as well as jump and traverse obstacles just like in hack & slash games.
Combat is far more engaging that in any other MMORPG before it due to its open world, allowing for many different possibilities. Fighting against big ass monsters (BAMs) feel like impromptu boss battles that really test you and your teammate’s abilities. No matter which class you’re playing as, everyone gets to participate in combat. Even support classes like priests and mystics can occasionally move in and do some damage.
By Review Date: November 13, 2013EU, Until patch 23.05.00 (November 2013).Played this game for a period, free-to-play.There is also a subscription promoting your account to tera-club, advantages are minor, like running some instances twice a day. The f2p restricts to one per day. And some vanity items that aren't really important.A synopsis of what i saw, maybe helps, maybe not.But in my opinion, developers should consider redesign major parts of it pretty soon, because with new upcoming mmo's, tera will simply die.First, i wanna say that game had potentials. Nice graphics, map, models etc. A bit of wow clone, but also different. A unique battle (aiming) system but unfortunately a simple element can't save the day.I'm gonna skip the bugs, glitches, terrible encoding with spikes n low fps, an almost nonexistent support of the distributor company (gameforge). Those stuff are expected in a beta game, not in a final release with several patches applied. But they already know them long time now and i don't think they consider change anything. So,About pve:- The game has no high-end pve content.
Cap level is 60. All instances below 60 + some older patches 60 instances and raids, are completely useless. No one ever goes there for no reason, not even for exp, or achievements or story quests etc.Added 4 new instances in last patch, upgrading the pve gear of players. All manageable with previous sets of gear. The logic in that? Players grind the new pve gear to accomplish.
New sets with higher stats with no high-end content to test and challenge. Is really poor that the most difficult boss (Manaya) remains the hardest instance in game and was content of previous patches for much lower ilvl gear.
Even the new added lower gear set (steadfast) is more than enough. And everyone can obtain it from a 10man normal raid, a silly-easy instance, or even by exchanging tokens with npc's.- +12 is max enchantment for gear. Grind till you +12 your gear. And how u do that? By farming an instance solo, Labyrinth of Terror (LoT) and by doing a boring daily event, Nexus.
Hours of grinding the materials to upgrade your gear. So boring that you wish to die. Repeatable, silly and above all, for no particular reason. So, you just aim for the top pve gear, the Shining Vissionmaker 2. Sooner or later u gonna get them, just need money and some runs in 10man raid mentioned above. Then spend days doing LoT and nexus till +12. Then all you can do is stand in a city, admiring your well-dressed char that has simply nothing else to do.And here ends a short description of indifferent pve in tera.About pvp:Considering pvp in most MMO games, the end-content material:A mess.Unless you play on pvp server, open world pvp doesn't even exist.
There's no reward for players there, so is dead. Even in pvp servers is just to spend your time if you are really bored. There are 3 instances for pvp:CS (Corsair's Stronghold 20v20),FW (Fraywind Canyon 15v15),Arena (3v3).All of those yield some reputation points (there are 2 kinds) needed to get pvp gear.
Each one different amounts. Both needed.About CS, there are hundreds of topics to check in the tera forums.
Bugs, the unbalance levels (since everyone from lvl 30+ can enter with no skills at all), mechanics of tanks and cannons that can win or loose the battle and so on. All players entering this pvp ground, get equalized gear and auto-level adjustment to 60. But as said, the 30 level, has still the 30 level skills. CS isn't really pvp, is somekinda pvp-event with the highest attendance, since most players go there to get tons of exp and level to 60.
Others who go there for the pvp fun, enter as 5man premades. Praying not to be on noobish-raid group and loose their time.FW is the most interesting pvp instance. Only characters, no machines etc. But lacks 2 things: Players and rewards. Active in pvp servers, dead in pve servers. And still, the rewards from there (the points mentioned above) are not worthy and that's why most players don't really care to attend it. Just for the fun of pure pvp.
But that's all and that's why isn't the top pvp instance.Arena is nice, but needs top gear. And premade 3man group of specific classes. So, unless you have grind a nice set, you just die in seconds.Gear. Here comes a dreadful unbalance of the game. The pvp gear is by far the most time-consuming and difficult set to get. Called the Cruel Vissionmaker 2, the top one. A hardcore, dedicated player, has to farm from the 3 pvp instances a huge amount of points.
Months to even consider get a single piece of the 3 pcs armor or the weapon (almost undo-able). Is really a joke. But anyway, since is that way, let's see:The right thing: there should be a reward according the hours the player spends ingame to upgrade his character.Nope, here money is the most important. Players who own millions can craft a whole pve set in matter of days. And is provable since servers are full with that gear some weeks after patch launched. How many u think have already crafted the pvp set? Even one piece??
You guessed right, less than 10.And on the top of that, that gear is comparable with the pve set! The differences are minor!Considering the time and money needed to craft the 2 sets and the philosophy of pve and pvp,- the pve should be excellent for pve and garbage for pvp,- the pvp should be adequate (mediocre) for pve and OPx100000 for pvp.But now, even a player with the easy obtainable low ilvl gear from the 10man raid is competitive in pvp. So, what's the reason to spend months get the pvp set?
Probably, none.Bottom line: Since someone is orientated to pvp and spends months to get that gear, should be almost impossible to face him without having the same kind of gear. And if pve players moan about that, tough luck! Since they choose pve mode and 'easy' way, they can't really demand to be competitive in pvp. No one will deny entry to them for pvp, but they 'll get farmed bad if they meet top-pvp geared as opponents. And here ends another short description of an unbalanced and time-waste pvp grind.Well, that's most of it, many other minor and frustrating things ofc, but developers don't really care. It's pity. Really, this game with little effort could be nice and with more people. But suffers two basic things: Logic and imaginative creation. Both crucial for an MMO game.Fun to play as starter, but when you decide to dedicate more time, doesn't really worth it, gonna end pretty soon.
